  • The Beech Tree

The Beech Tree stood on the corner of the bank on the edge of what is now the car park.  It was a great tree and all the boys used to climb it and then drop down onto the bank and roll down the slope.  Still today the children continue to climb onto the bank and slide or roll down the grassy slope.  Apparently, it is the only way to finish a visit to Chapel! It was decided the tree had to go.   Wearne Pearse, of Middle Taphouse, was asked to bring his steam engine out to pull it over.  The…

  • A circuit service giving thanks to our Minister, Revd Robert, on his retirement was held on Sunday, 14 August.  Connon was full with at least 100 people wanting to be part of such a memorable occasion.  The service was lead by Revd Mark Pengelly.   It was a happy, informal service with hymns chosen by Robert and Marion.  Amusing anecdotes of Robert’s ministry were recalled but the overall message was of Robert’s caring empathy, good humour and guidance.  The service was followed by another Connon ‘Wow’ tea and we are looking forward to having Robert back amongst as a Supernumerary Minister.

  • A letter from Rev Robert Saunders following his recent statement: Dear Friends I was most moved by the concern and love from you that followed my announcement of my retirement in August, which is the end of the Methodist Church Year. This will be my second retirement, though in Methodism we talk not of a minister’s retirement but of the minister “sitting down”. (Something I have been doing a lot of just lately!) Our years in service are counted as year’s “travelled”. I first “sat down” some six years ago, but was put back on my feet four years ago…

  • Family Service on Sunday 14th June Following the Family Fun Day, the weekend was rounded off with a Family Service which was very well attended including several children. The highlight was the congregation following Revd Robert out into the graveyard singing One More Step Along the Way, then, with those that were already lying there in mind, For All the Saints Who From Their Labours Rest and we returned singing Oh When the Saints Go Marching In. Back in the Church over fellowship we celebrated the 90th birthday of Elizabeth and we send her all our good wishes for many…

  • Family Fun Day

On Saturday, 13 June Connon Chapel held an enjoyable Family Fun Day to celebrate its 150th Anniversary.   The day was very well attended with visitors coming from a wide area.  There was no entry fee and everything was free except for the 2nd or 3rd serving from the BBQ and the ice creams.  There was a Bouncy Castle, many different Lawn Games, Face Painting and the highlight was a mini concert given by the Playful Chorus, directed by Nick Hart.  In the craft area children drew on pieces of material which were all added to a huge banner celebrating the 150th Anniversary.…

  • Two services were held on Sunday 17 May to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Connon Chapel. In the morning we were pleased to welcome Revd Steven Wild president elect of the Methodist Conference supported by our own Revd Robert Saunders. It was a joyful service and well supported with a congregation of 67.   Revd Wild is a huge enthusiast for Methodism and if he is ever preaching in your locality, go and listen!   In the afternoon we had a special service celebrating 150 years at Connon. We were bursting at the ‘seams’ with a congregation of 117. Revd Robert led…

  • Easter Sunday

The Easter Sunday Service was very well supported, at least 60 people, with ages ranging from 1 to 93 years. The Chapel was beautifully decorated with many spring flowers and was dominated by the large cross erected at the front (see photo). The morning started with breakfast in the Sunday School, followed by the Service led by Revd Robert and, as ever, he was interesting, informative and sprinkled with humour. Easter eggs were hidden around the Chapel and the children got up and searched for them, gave them to Revd Robert who then shared them out amongst the children. There…

  • Carol Service

Our Carol Service was held on Sunday, 21 December.  This year, in the absence of Revd Robert, it was led by Charlotte and Patrick Clarke.   There were many carols, readings and these were interspersed with ‘scenes’ of the nativity story acted by Charlotte and Patrick with the help of the children, some sheep and importantly, a wise donkey, whose sage observations of the events that had enfolded capped a truely marvellous Service. Charlotte and Patrick must be congratulated in putting together such an enjoyable service at short notice.  They will be leading the Christingle Service on Christmas Eve at 5.00 pm –…

  • Connon Chapel celebrated Pentecost with an afternoon  Messy Church.  We talked about God’s Spirit being like the wind, like breath and gentle as a dove. We explored these ideas with a multicoloured parachute, we made wind socks, doves of all sizes and colours and even got sprayed by a shaken up bottle of lemonade. There were songs, games and lots of laughter and James played his French Horn. Balloons seemed to be everywhere. There were twenty adults and ten children. A great Tea was enjoyed by everyone and we look forward to the next Messy Church in September.
